Winter Echoes · Chapter one

Winter’s Invitation

The first hints of winter arrived earlier than expected.

Frost clung to the windowpanes, a quiet reminder that the seasons were shifting once again. The air carried the weight of change—brisk, sharp, yet somehow invigorating. And with it came a decision they had talked about only in passing until now.

It had been nearly three years since their journey began, and several months since he moved to her area, the convergence of timing and circumstance pulling their lives closer and allowing the potential between them to be explored.

Since then, life had not slowed, though their love continued to blossom.

There had been laughter, conversations, and silent moments that still felt light and unburdened. They continued to rediscover what it meant to feel understood, appreciated, desired, and loved. Each in their own way and in their own time.

Disagreements were more awkward due to their infrequency, and while they seemed inevitable in any relationship not carved from illusion, nothing was able to derail them, let alone fracture them. If anything, such events exposed the raw edges of two people still learning about and from each other, while continuing to test the boundaries of trust and patience.

The remarkable thing was not the absence of struggle. It was the return, every time, to something steady. Their willingness to show up again—to be present, even when there was a struggle for words.

Their last trip to the cabin felt like a distant dream—a memory not forgotten but treasured. Now, with the year waning and the first snowfall starting its quiet descent, the thoughts and feelings that memory brought seemed less like a recollection and more like an invitation.

She took a moment from her work to look outside at the falling snow, once again igniting a flood of memories. She picked up her phone and typed her message.

Know what I’m thinking about?

The text itself, while vague and potentially cryptic, made her smile. His response didn’t take long to arrive.

The night we met?

She shook her head and chuckled to herself.

How did you know?

His response came just as quickly.

I was just looking outside and thinking the same thing.

Beautiful, isn’t it?

She leaned back in her chair, letting her thoughts settle. Beautiful indeed. While not a fan of the cold, winter now held a different, somewhat special place in her heart, for several reasons.

As she gazed outside, more memories of their first experience at the cabin surfaced—the awkward moments with the motel clerk, their first conversation, the snowcat, the hidden treasures, and their first intimate moments—

Her fingers moved just as quickly as she interrupted her own thoughts.

It is! Want to go back?

The resort where things began had been both a refuge and a catalyst. It was a place where walls lowered, honesty slipped through defenses, and the presence of a new friend made it possible to ease their hold on the past.

It was where they had first seen each other, in several ways. Not as perfect versions, but as flawed, weary, resilient, and beautiful souls.

While they had carried challenges with them through the seasons that followed, the cabin still held a special place for them. It would likely be a cherished location going forward—and a permanent fixture in their ongoing story.

His response was not a surprise.

Always!

I can’t think of a better place to celebrate three years.
